1kg of 404a refrigerant (the most common refrigerant currently used on farm) has a CO2equivalent of 3.922T or 3.92 carbon credits. At $35 per NZU carbon credit, this tax alone accounts for $137 per kg of 404a, before other levies and the cost of refrigerant itself is added. In short, refrigerant gas is expensive, both economically and environmentally. To mitigate this cost to our clients, Dairycool are proactively using lower emission refrigerants such as 407c and 449a on new installations.
However, it is essential you have efficiently operating refrigeration units, regularly maintained and serviced to help minimise costly breakdowns.
We highly recommend twice yearly servicing to ensure small issues do not become major expenses.
